BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

I appear on 37 albums as of Spring 2023, four under my name and the others as coleader or sideperson, with such renowned artists as Dave Liebman, Terri Lyne Carrington, John Patitucci, Marc Ribot, many others. Over the years I have collected information from many leading performers and teachers, both jazz and classical, about technique and improvisation. At this stage in my life I find that I am able to sift through and organize the best information out there, as well as what my own experience can offer, to create individual practice plans that are highly efficient and that facilitate rapid and substantive musical progress. I work with intermediate and advanced student and professional musicians of all ages, and I also teach improvisation to those who play other instruments such as guitar, saxophone, bass, etc.

Some of my students have worked on classical music and want to learn jazz but also to continue their classical studies. For these students I will suggest classical repertory and technical studies that they can work on in addition to practicing their new jazz skills. (Although I don't perform classical music in public, I do coach classics. My knowledge of classical music is extensive, and my Ph.D. is in classical music history.)
